Salzburg Christmas Tour
- Salzburg's history in the Advent season
- History of Silent Night, Holy Night
- Cultural and culinary delicacies at the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt
And that's what awaits you:
Residenzplatz - Salzburg Christkindlmarkt
We start at the Residenzplatz in front of the Christmas tree and walk across the Salzburg Christkindlmarkt to the Salzburg Cathedral. I will tell you the historical background of the Christmas market and show you many traditional handicrafts made with love at different Christmas stands.
Salzburg Cathedral - Silent Night History
The baptismal font in Salzburg Cathedral, the auxiliary parish priest Joseph Mohr or Johann Michael Haydn have one thing in common — they are somehow connected with the origination of the song “Silent Night, Heilige Nacht”. What exactly happened 200 years ago in Salzburg and the surrounding area, where and how the song originated, or what significance this song took for many people back then and up to our time, is an exciting story.
St. Peter district - Benedictine monastery
The walk continues with a view of the Hohensalzburg fortress over the cathedral square to the St. Peter district. The Benedictine monastery offers a pleasant contrast to the princely town and offers beautiful impressions of some church towers and the monastery of St. Peter. The monastery received a letter asking for enlightenment on the recognition of the song Silent Night. And so it came to the constitution of the “Authentic Initiation” of the song Silent Night.
Salzburg Fetspielhaus - University of Salzburg
The Salzburger Festspielhaus plays an important role not only in summer. Even in Advent, traditional Salzburg Advent Singing with beautiful stories by Heinrich Waggerl offers a contemplative to stimulating mood for the “Silent Time” of the year.
From the Salzburger Festspielhaus we continue to the Universitätsplatz, where we discover the back of the Mozart birthplace, but also the Salzburger Grünmarkt with the wonderful Klettzenbrot, cheese, vegetables and fruits. What Christmas traditions were there in Mozart's times? What is eaten at Christmas time in a variety of countries?
In contrast to the Christmas hustle and bustle, you will find silence in the white-styled Kollegienkirche.
Alter Markt - first Christmas tree in Salzburg
Many people have always been bustling at the Alte Markt. Many use the famous coffee houses as a meeting place with family or friends. Already in the 19th century, the high society met at the Alte Markt. Over the years, the Christmas tradition developed from here with the first Christmas tree in Salzburg.
Salzburg Christmas Market - Mozartplatz
Back at the Salzburger Christkindlmarkt, you will learn how the nativity scene came to our area and how it developed in various forms.
Then it's time for a Christmas treat and mulled wine at one of the Christmas booths. And as a reminder of your stay at the Salzburg Christmas Market, you will receive the mulled wine cup as a gift.
Stay longer at the Salzburg Chrsitkindlmarkt. There are daily interesting programs and beautiful music to tune in to the Christmas season. Have fun and a contemplative Advent season.
